What’s not to love about German Shepherds? This breed’s got heart! Which is why this month, Austin German Shepherd Rescue is focusing on heart-healthiness for our adoptable dogs. You can Save a Heart now through February 28 by helping us meet two goals:

(1) Funding for the TREATMENT of 10 heartworm-positive dogs. Heartworm treatment is extremely expensive, but when a dog who comes into our program tests positive for heartworms (and 80% of them do!), removing these deadly parasites becomes Job One. Treatment for one dog is about $250 – and that is a deep, deep “rescue” discount. Can you help us raise $2,500 by February 28th? You can make your donation online or by check.

(2) Once these ten dogs have been treated for heartworms, they will need to take a HEARTWORM PREVENTATIVE monthly to avoid contracting them again. The good news is, unlike treatment, preventatives are cheap! Would you like to help out one of 10 foster dogs waiting for forever homes? Make an in-kind donation of new (unexpired) heartworm preventatives to AGSR, for dogs 55 lbs. and larger. We prefer ivermectin-based preventatives such as Iverhart or Heartgard, which can be purchased from any veterinarian or online through retailers such as 1800PetMeds.com or PetCareRx.com. Simply email us, let us know where you are, and one of our volunteers will contact you about picking up your donation. Remember, “Austin” German Shepherd Rescue is actually located in Austin, Houston, San Antonio – and parts in between! You can also drop off your donation at one of our upcoming Meet & Greets.

Several of our currently available dogs are Heartworm positive. The lovely Ivory is currently undergoing heartworm treatment. Read Ivory's blog and follow her progress!

HEART-HEALTHY TIPS FOR ALL DOGS

  1. If you have not already, have your dog tested for heartworms. If he tests positive, have him treated immediately. Heartworms will NOT go away by themselves.

  2. When you are certain your dogs are heartworm-negative, make sure they are all on a recommended heartworm preventative. Make it a “first of the month” routine to administer their preventative.

  3. Don’t put off your vet’s annual exam reminder; schedule an appointment for a checkup every year. As with humans, many potential issues, including the detection of heartworms, can be “nipped in the bud” at that annual exam. Your vet will probably want to re-test your dog for heartworms annually, even if he is on a preventative.

  4. Keep your dog at a healthy weight. Feed her a premium dog food that’s wheat and corn-free (she doesn’t need those extra carbs either), resist the temptation to over-treat, and limit her consumption of “people food”.

  5. For most dogs, the words “Want to go for a walk?” are the greatest in the world. Don’t cheat your dog out of this wonderful exercise, for his sake as well as yours. Proper leash walking is as mentally exhausting to a dog as it is physically exhausting, and a tired dog is a good dog! Cesar Millan recommends a 45-minute power walk first thing in the morning.
