1/25/08 Update:

Trooper is an incredibly gorgeous, large, four year old sable German Shepherd with a strong mind and athletic body. He demonstrates the strengths of the breed such as attentiveness, independence, confidence and intelligence. He is aloof and standoffish with strangers but bonds tightly with his handler once the connection is established through mutual respect and understanding.

Trooper is looking for a handler that is adept at providing strong but fair leadership, a consistent obedience routine and regular mind/body workouts. Only handlers experienced with strong minded, high drive dogs will be considered as an adoptive match for Trooper and evaluation and/or additional training by a trusted AGSDR approved trainer/behaviorist may be required prior to adoption.

Trooper was an owner surrendered dog who was rescued from an area shelter along with Gretta (also available separately for adoption through AGSDR). Both dogs had suffered extreme neglect of body and mind for a good period of time based on outward appearances. Both dogs were severely underweight, had serious hair loss/itching and showed no signs of previous training/leadership. From all obvious signs they seemed to have primarily lived a lonely, loveless existence in a backyard.

After several months of good food, medical care and some leadership training, Trooper has finally re-grown his gorgeous sable coat and put on the much needed pounds. He has been started on a routine where he must work for the things he wants and “nothing in life is free”. Now that he has reached a good weight he will also begin a jogging routine to provide the physical workout he needs.

Trooper has settled in nicely with his foster family and we believe that he would do best as an only dog or possibly with a more submissive, large breed female. He should not live with small dogs or cats. Trooper would also prefer a no kid household/lifestyle. Although he currently has limited “free” household privileges (due to other male resident dogs and the family cats), he has never had an accident in his foster home and is crate trained.

For the handler who loves the challenge of a brilliant, strong minded dog, Trooper will become the love of your life. He will however be a work in progress as additional obedience training, socialization, etc. will be needed. Trooper desires to please those he respects and therefore will make an excellent pupil. Please remember that respect is earned and not demanded nor to be taken for granted… Trooper understands this.

Trooper will begin heartworm treatment on February 6th and will be ready to go home and begin his new life one month later. An earlier go home date may be arranged if the adoptive family is willing and able to maintain the required “30-day quiet period” for recovery.

If you are interested in learning more and having the opportunity to meet Trooper personally, please submit your application, including notes in the comments section about your experience level working with/training dogs.

These are Trooper's "Before" pictures....

Hi, I'm Trooper!

My previous owners dumped me and my pal at the shelter.

We were in bad shape...

REALLY bad shape...

Skinny, missing hair...

...and very VERY itchy!

But I'm getting LOTS to eat now.

And comfy places to lay INSIDE the house!

But I'm still happy...now, that is!

Even still a bit playful at times.

And like all good shepherds, I'm still regal, despite the painful shape I am in!

NOTE:  In our experience many German Shepherd Dogs are very good with kids.  In our bios, we may provide information on our experience with a particular dog and children.  However AGSDR discourages ALL unsupervised animal/child interaction.  Children should be supervised at all times when they interact with ANY animal, whether it is a horse, dog, cat, bunny, lizard, or any other species.  Even loving household pets can have a grumpy day, or otherwise get tired of a child's attention, so proper supervision is essential for the well being of any child and any pet.

The entire biography of this dog is based solely upon our volunteers' direct experiences with the dog. The dog's age is an estimate, and statements about the state of health, temperament, training, and ability to get along with other animals, children, cats and other dogs, is estimated solely based on our volunteer's experiences with this dog. Your experiences with this dog may be quite different.
