Update from King's Foster Dad on 5/14/08
In spite of King's country upbringing, he has adjusted very well
to the big city life. He loves to go for a run or
rollerblading. He trots beautifully beside the runner and
gallops gracefully with rollerblades. He walks well on a leash
but with some pulling. He has learned to sit and stay for all
meals and before going out for walks. Recently a small male
cock-a-poo has been added to the pack and King has accepted
him. They now "patrol" the house together and it is a sight to
see. King is a good mannered boy who is ready to take his
training to the next level.

Howdy
y'all!! My name is King and I've got a tale to tell. About 2
years ago I was wanderin' down an ole horse trail in these woods
and ran across some folks ridin' horses. I don't know if they
were ridin' back from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo or
what, but I decided to follow em'. Well one of the kind cowboys
thought I was a good fella and I felt the same way about him.
He decided to let me follow him home and he gave me a warm
meal. Well...at that point I decided I'd stick around since it
was a lot better than wanderin' in the woods hungry.
He taught me how to tend to the horses on his ranch since he
worked with a horse rescue and such. Those horses are somethin'
else...much harder and smarter to work than cattle but that's
another tale. Even with all of this horse workin' I was still
lonley. So...my cowboy friend got me a girl. Mighty fine
looking thang she was!! Beautiful brown eyes just like a good
looking shepherd should. Well...we ended up having 2
boys. We all lived happily on the ranch, I was teachin' em' to
tend the horses like I do.
Then, a couple of months ago, my cowboy friend had a heart
attack. He did not die, but it left him to where he can no
longer care for the horses and the ranch. So, me and my boys
had to find a place to go along with the horses. My girl, she
got to stay behind, and I am happy about her. I hear both of my
boys got adopted, which I knew they would since they look just
like thier pa but with their mother's eyes.
As
for me, I was surrendered to the kind folks of the Austin German
Shepherd Dog Rescue. Currently, I'm livin' in Houston and about
the only thing familiar to me right now is the rodeo goin' on in
town. At my new place I am learnin' to sit, stay, and walk on
a leash. I'm doing real good, too. You know I never had that
much schoolin' but I'm learnin fast! I like it too, especially
the treats, pats, and attention. I do really good in the house
too. I don't get into much trouble, but I do like to counter
surf. I haven't gotten ON the counter, but I do like to smell
what is up there. When I need to go out, I just go out the
doggie door.
I also watch the house and only bark if I really see something
that is not right. I am very self-assured, confident, and
intelligent. I would do best with someone who has had some
experience with strong guys like me. A family without small
children would be nice since I am so big and could knock them
down. I am 100lbs! That is all cowboy ranchin' muscle folks!
I might do just fine with large dogs, especially the little
darlin's. Don't worry--I've been fixed. My foster
dad seems to think that I wouldn't like cats 'cause I love to
mess with those squirrels, but ya never know.
I would do best back on a ranch or in the country, but I have
adjusted to city slickin' mighty fine. I just need a job to
keep me busy and the treats a comin'. That could be training,
walking, running, or playing with my Kong toy (King's
Kong). The folks I'm stayin' with really love the way I am so
eager to please. They say I'm just a good ole' boy and
that I'm handsome too. Oh yeah..did I mention that I crate
real nice and I looooove takin' those naps! All said, I am a very
loving gentle boy and really just a big baby (don't tell anyone)
looking for a good home where love is King.
Lovin' ya 'til the cows come home,
King
NOTE:
In our experience many German Shepherd Dogs are very good with kids.
In our bios, we may provide information on our experience with a
particular dog and children. However AGSDR discourages ALL
unsupervised animal/child interaction. Children should be supervised at
all times when they interact with ANY animal, whether it is a horse, dog,
cat, bunny, lizard, or any other species. Even loving household pets
can have a grumpy
day, or otherwise get tired of a child's attention, so
proper supervision is essential for the
well being of any child and any
pet.
The entire biography of this dog is based
solely upon our volunteers' direct experiences with the dog. The
