Well, we have learned that our little athlete will stay in his yard, as long as he has plenty of other dogs to play with, and nothing on the other side of the fence to entice him to leave his yard. He and Axl have become quite the play buddies, and he is also very fond of the other dogs here. This guy is sooo smart, too! He loves to go on walks, and play and play with his friends at his foster Mom's.
7/28/12 Update
Well we have learned that our sweet smart boy Kain/Jackson is a fence jumper! He can even manage to get over a six foot privacy fence when there are other dogs in the adjacent yard he would like to play with. He is quite the athlete! Because of this we will need to be sure that he goes to a home that has maybe a 7 ft, or iron fence that he cannot scale and sail over the top. A trainer has suggested coyote rollers, on the inside of the fence to keep him in, and this sounds like it would work. You can Google it, or more info can be provided. Other than this, he is the sweetest, smartest dog you will meet.He loves other dogs, but is very human focused, too, and loves his tummy rubs! Please don't let this flaw stop you if he is the right guy for you. With the proper work and positive re-enforcement training, he will be a great addition to your family.

This is day 36 of marker training with Kain. He has learned so much in the short time we've had him. His enthusiasm for training makes him such a joy to work with. He already knows his sit, platz (down), and spinning on touch pad. He is getting the hang of his "stand" and we have also begun his attention heeling. We will be adding duration to his commands soon. He is very bright, we can see his brain working during training. He figures out patterns very easily and learns new behaviors very quickly. Everything we are doing with him is motivational, we have not given him any correction. It is really helping to build his confidence and his desire to train shows through the video. He is such a lovable dog, will surely make his future adopter very happy.

Watch Kain's marker training! What a smart dog!
11/20/11 Update
Kain has been with us, the new foster parents, for 9 days. He is full of puppy energy and eagerness to learn. He is very sweet, loves to follow you around the house, and is a soft temperament dog. He is an active young dog, and will be a great companion for a family that will make his exercise needs one of the priorities for the household. We have several dogs of our own and when properly introduced, he is not reactive towards them (but they are always under supervision). He has very good food drive but very low ball/tug drive. He is a bright dog, learns quickly, and LOVES to train. He can be a great training buddy for someone who is interested in more advanced obedience work.
Here is a video of him training with foster mom on day 8
8/19/11 Update
Kain has finished his training with flying colors, at the top of his class! What a smart boy he is! He would just love to show you what he has learned. We are doing what is called a slow kill treatment for his heartworms, and he is doing great on it. He will be rechecked in a few months and should be heartworm free. Kain does not do well without regular walks, and is very young, so that is why we decided to do it this way. Also, a lot easier on him. Please come meet Kain! He is a sweetheart! Not sure if you can tell from his pics, but he has a bit of a mohawk. It makes him even more endearing!! You will not meet a sweeter, more affectionate dog than Kain!
6/6/11 Update

Kain is reported to be around 1yr old, though his current foster parents think he's a bit younger! He's an extremely sweet dog and loves attention from his people. He's got a whole lot of puppy in him, that's for sure. He is learning how to behave in the house a lot better, and seems to be completely house-broken - no accidents in the house at all. He even figured out the doggy door by only watching other dogs - he learns the ropes fast. He's not allowed to hang out in the house by himself because he will occasionally chew on things, but this is a lot less common with the daily hour walks he loves. He's doing really well on leash and in public, too! He does have heartworms and will begin his treatment in mid-May.
We really can't put into words how much of a sweetheart Kain is. He loves all people big and small! He will just lay at your feet and enjoy all the petting you can dish out. He's a snuggler too, if he's invited to lay where you are. He has a bit of a prey drive, though, so houses with cats would not be a good fit for him.
NOTE: In our experience many German Shepherd Dogs are very good with kids. In our bios, we may provide information on our experience with a particular dog and children. However AGSDR discourages ALL unsupervised animal/child interaction. Children should be supervised at all times when they interact with ANY animal, whether it is a horse, dog, cat, bunny, lizard, or any other species. Even loving household pets can have a grumpy day, or otherwise get tired of a child's attention, so proper supervision is essential for the well being of any child and any pet.
