Update 9-27-12

Eli earned his AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certificate on 09-27, we are so proud of him! He keeps surprising us with his ability to learn and absorb information. Eli has come a long way in the last 4 months. He has great potential to accomplish so much more. His ideal adopter will be someone who is as enthusiastic about dog training as he is.

Update 9-23-12

Eli is continuing his quest to learn more commands/behaviors. We are looking for a family who will enjoy him as a training partner, maybe even pursue formal obedience with him. As we get to know him better and better, we feel Eli is best suited for a family with older children (10 to 12, or older). He is very loving towards his people, but he is easily excitable and can knock down a little one inadvertently. He loves to cuddle up with his human in bed. It is very important, however, for his new family to practice NILIF ("Nothing In Life is Free") with him. It helps him establish his boundaries and his position in the pack. Eli responds very well to marker training and it will be beneficial for his new family to have an understanding of the system.

Update 9-2-12

Eli has been with us for 3.5 months. He is doing great. He has settled down a lot and is now crate-trained. His enthusiasm for training is always high, regardless of the time of day, he is always ready to go. Here is a video update of his training.

Update 6-15-12

Day 26 of Marker Training

Update 5-25-12

Eli has been with us for about 12 days. He is still a big puppy, probably barely over a year old. He adapted to his new environment very quickly. He is a lot of fun to train and work with. He has intensity and drives that are very typical of working dogs. He is responding very well to motivational training. He has good food drive, and we are teaching him how to play tug so it can eventually be used as a reward during obedience work.

Eli is best suited for an experienced handler. The handler needs to be on top of everything at all times. A handler who can guide him with consistency and firmness will help him mature into a stable and well-adjusted dog. Eli is incredibly smart. He is not a dominant dog, but he is confident and persistent, he will easily train his handler if given the chance. Eli will do great with a family that is active, and be willing to work him physically and mentally on a daily basis. We make him walk 3-4 miles with a weighted backpack and give him 3-5 training sessions daily, this combination appears to keep his energy at bay.

4/29/12

Check out our newest addition to the rescue! And Ladies, he's even house trained! Eli is looking for his new forever home. He is very human focused and affectionate, following you everywhere and always ready with a kiss. Absolutely loves to be outside and walks well on his leash after the first few minutes.

His favorite thing to do is to ride in the car, with his head out the window, or better yet looking out the sunroof! He would be prefect for the active person, couple or family with older children. He loves kids... he just doesn't know how big he is! We haven't met another dog that he hasn't gotten along with, and wanted to play with. He is not good with cats so he does need to go to a cat-free family. So, get your application in now so you don't miss this very handsome, energetic young male!

NOTE: In our experience many German Shepherd Dogs are very good with kids. In our bios, we may provide information on our experience with a particular dog and children. However AGSDR discourages ALL unsupervised animal/child interaction. Children should be supervised at all times when they interact with ANY animal, whether it is a horse, dog, cat, bunny, lizard, or any other species. Even loving household pets can have a grumpy day, or otherwise get tired of a child's attention, so proper supervision is essential for the well being of any child and any pet.

The entire biography of this dog is based solely upon our volunteers' experiences with the dog. The dog's age and weight are estimates, and statements about the health, temperament, training, and ability to get along with other animals, children, cats and other dogs, are estimated solely based on our volunteer's experiences with this dog. Your experiences with this dog may be quite different than those of our volunteers.
