Sweet Herbie- he has definitely had a few hard knocks in the past. He arrived to animal control with an embedded harness. The severe infection had affected so much tissue that a piece of his vertebrae lay exposed. SNIPSA vets worked diligently to flush his wounds and rid it of massive infection. He had such a terrible abscess that it looked like a grapefruit was hanging from his rib cage. He was a stoic patient during all the triage. We expect him to make a full recovery given a few weeks. On top of the embedded harness, Herbie in on the thin side and could definitely stand to gain a few pounds. As soon as he discovered a bowl of cat food on the patio, you would have thought he had discovered gold. He weighs 56 pounds and has the frame of a 70 lb dog.

Despite his difficult past, he is as sweet and forgiving as they come. Herbie does well with other dogs, wants to play, and romp around. He is great with people, simply needs to learn a few manners which will come with time. He is very food motivated so would be easy to teach. Plus, German Shepherds are inherently intelligent- the reason they are chosen as service dogs. For those looking for a devoted companion or are familiar with the German Shepherd breed, Herbie would make an excellent choice. For more information, please contact snipsashannon@gmail.com.

NOTE: In our experience many German Shepherd Dogs are very good with kids. In our bios, we may provide information on our experience with a particular dog and children. However AGSDR discourages ALL unsupervised animal/child interaction. Children should be supervised at all times when they interact with ANY animal, whether it is a horse, dog, cat, bunny, lizard, or any other species. Even loving household pets can have a grumpy day, or otherwise get tired of a child's attention, so proper supervision is essential for the well being of any child and any pet.

The entire biography of this dog is based solely upon our volunteers' direct experiences with the dog. The dog's age is an estimate, and statements about the state of health, temperament, training, and ability to get along with other animals, children, cats and other dogs, is estimated solely based on our volunteer's experiences with this dog. Your experiences with this dog may be quite different.
