Pets' 10 Commandments

  1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.
  2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
  3. Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.
  4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainments, but I have only you.
  5. Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand yourvoice when speaking to me.
  6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.
  7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.
  8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.
  9. Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.
  10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me when you are there because I love you so.

In Loving Memory of CrickettCrickett at 7
Crickett at 1.5 YearsCrickett joined our family back in April of 2001. Two days before our adoption, Crickett developed elbow dysphasia and needed surgery immediately. I was devastated by the news, but I had already fallen in love with her and still went through with the adoption. Maria, her foster Mom, named her Cricket because the way she used to pounce on things when she was little. I kept her name because it still suited her because after the surgery, she developed a “crick” when she walked.

She lived a wonderful life with us for 8 years and became great friends with Celine (our other rescue). She always had a smile on her face. She was such a comedian. When she would do something silly, she would look at me, like she was saying, “see what I can do, Mommy”. All you could do is just laugh. If you didn’t stop her, she would keep it up; we would laugh so hard we were falling out of the chair.

The hardest thing is when you lose your closest companion, who you have loved for so many years. She will be truly missed.

Thank you AGSDR for allowing our family to adopt her.

The Glick family.

A very special Thank You to Marina Latto

She opted to collect donations for the needy dogs of Austin German Shepherd Rescue in lieu of Birthday presents for her 8th birthday party. We need more caring, giving people in the world like Marina! Good Job Marina!!

A donation in memory of Rebel Griffin was made by Kay McSpadden , Jo Kilgore, Carol McFarland, Debra Martin-Barber , Vickie Kersey , Randy Gray , Susan Geyer, and Lucinda Meltabarger.

In memoriam to the world's most valuable dog: Rebel
Rebel

Time spent in the company of a good companion is one of the most valuable commodities life has to offer. In his capacity as my friend, Rebel excelled in providing comfort in times of distress, humor in times of sadness, warmth and company in times of loneliness and cold, protection in times of danger. No one could ever ask or receive more from a friend. If you get to this little memoriam while thinking about adopting a GSD who needs a home, go for it. The sadness of loss is a small thing compared to the joy such a companion brings even if it is only for a little while. >
- Rebel Griffin is fondly remembered by Kristin, who generously donated many of Rebel's supplies to Austin German Shepherd Dog Rescue in the hope that another dog's life may be saved. The German Shepherd Rescue community grieves with Kristin, and thanks her for her kind donation even in the face of tremendous sadness.

In Support of Ajax

AGSDR recognizes a generous donation made by Brian Clary, Esq. for the veterinary expenses of Ajax.  Ajax came to the rescue in very poor condition, extremely malnourished, and with a terrible case of mange.  Brian recognizes the energy and time that volunteers devote to saving these dogs and bringing them back to health, and he hopes that his donation will help Ajax recover, become adoptable, and enjoy a second chance for a good life.  Thank you Mr. Clary.

AGSDR recognizes the generous and gentle veterinary care rendered to Ajax by Dr. Larry Keese, DVM.  Dr. Keese and his staff have helped AGSDR dogs for years, and always provide amazingly kind and high-quality treatment.  Dr. Keese is generous with his time, and with supplies for the rescue dogs.  AGSDR thanks him for his treatment of Ajax, and all the other rescued dogs which have healed due to his generosity.  Thank you Dr. Keese and everyone at Lake Parkway Animal Hospital.

Another generous grant from The Woodlands Dog Park Club of Montgomery County Texas (2007) (see below for more info about the Park Club).

The grant and other generous donations were made by
Woodlands Dog Park Club friends
— furry and not so furry
in Loving Memory of Gretchen and Maggie
,
beloved friends of the Leonard family.

Memories of Gretchen:  Gretchen joined our family 8 years ago, the pup of our daughter’s two German Shepherds, Hank and Hannah. Instant friendship ensued with our other Shepherd, Maggie, and we became a foursome!!!! On family get-togethers, Gretchen and Maggie would join all their “cousin” dogs and have a play-fest out at her country birthplace. She was a happy, inquisitive dog and loved many things---She loved walking in the woods, especially state parks; she loved The Woodlands Dog Park, of which she was a charter member, and she loved riding with Maggie in the '68 Mustang.  She was intelligent, loving and gentle, but most of all, she was a very special friend and we will miss her forever.

Memories of Maggie:  Fourteen years ago Maggie was a surprise Christmas present from our grandchildren!!  What a wonderful gift!  She found her way into our hearts immediately and quickly became one the best walkers in The Woodlands. Every morning she and Paul would explore the woods—many of which have now been replaced by homes, shopping centers and golf courses; she would walk forever, sometimes carrying home huge, wonderful sticks all the way home. She was delighted when we added Gretchen to our family and they formed a close friendship that lasted all their lives. She also enjoyed The Woodlands Dog Park, of which she was a charter member. The sound of the leash or the hum of  the Mustang was always music to Maggie’s ears. She was a wonderful friend and we will miss her forever.

Mr. Willson and his wife Jeanne had a long series of German Shepherds, whom they loved dearly.

In Loving Memory of Foster Foster, adopted from AGSDR in 2002, who passed away this year (2007).
His human friend, Debbie, shared his story with us:

To say that it was “Love at First Sight” is no exaggeration.  The picture Anne posted of Foster on petfinder.com was the first time I ever saw this beautiful animal.  He had the most piercing eyes and the sweetest face that I had seen in a very long time.  I was just browsing that day, but immediately knew I needed to meet this fellow.

When I spoke to Anne for the first time, she explained that Foster was one of those special guys that had been very abused and mistreated.  As I later found out, he did have some really strange phobias and fears.  However, he did love to “sing along” with the sirens and he loved to be praised for his beautiful voice.

It was so great to see him blossom as he learned that he had found a secure place to call home.  Watching him learn to just be happy and relaxed was one of the greatest gifts he gave to me.   I was so touched to see his bravery and trust in me.

I always called him “My special little angel” and now he really is.

Thanks Anne
Debbie Foster

A Generous Donation In Loving Memory of Millie. Adopted from GSR January 1997, Passed Away July 11, 2005.

David, Brenda, Jessica and Jayna Nelson

A story of Millie, shared with us...

My family was fortunate enough to adopt a beautiful 14 month old German Shepherd in 1997, we named her Millie. She brought us the greatest joy and her unexpected passing last week has left a huge whole in our hearts.

I contacted German Shepherd Rescue when my then 9 year old daughter wanted a "big" dog. Our family already included a Pomeranian we had found as a stray and two cats, so I explained that I needed a very gentle dog. I was told they would contact me when they had the right shepherd for us. A few weeks later we received a call that there was a dog in foster care with children, small dogs and cats, that might be perfect. They could have not been more right because she was perfect.

My family is extremely grateful for the work that you do in placing these precious dogs with caring people. I never understood how anyone could have given Millie up but I am very thankful that German Shepherd Rescue was there to take her and even more thankful that they chose to give her to us. Our vet comforted us by saying that she was lucky to have had us but the truth is that we were lucky to have had her grace our lives.

Please let me know how to make a donation in Millie's honor in the hope that others will be as blessed as we were.

Thank you,
Brenda Nelson
