many
times dogs are found by people who would gladly call you if only
there was a tag on the dog. Many people will check the paper
or make a few attempts to identify the owner. Sadly, though,
if the dog is not turned in to an animal shelter, it may never
even be checked for a microchip. The good Samaritan may end
up giving your dog to a coworker or family member after they feel
they have searched for the owner long enough. They may not
even think to have a vet check for a microchip.
If you were home, you'd likely have
run ads or put up signs. You may see their ad in lost and
found. But what if you are on vacation? If your dog
had tags with a back up number on them (your vet is a great
choice), the good Samaritan would have gladly returned your dog.
By trying to protect the dog and find it a new home outside the
animal shelter system, they may well have inadvertently prevented
the microchip from being discovered. |
