Donations fund AGSDR’s Welfare Intervention for Neglected German Shepherds “WINGS” program. Our WINGS Fund pays for every rescued German Shepherd’s medical and surgical vetting needs.

- Your address and contact details, plus a co-applicant if you have one
- Details about your home: own or rent, home type, and whether you have a fenced yard
- A landlord letter if you rent
- An HOA letter if you live in a condo or townhouse
- Call your vet to authorize AGSDR to discuss your resident pets’ vet records

It all started with Mutt.
AGSDR was founded 25 years ago by visionary Founder and President Anne Burkett. The journey began with a single abandoned puppy named Helmut, lovingly called “Mutt.” Mutt was more than a rescue, he became a symbol of hope, loyalty, and resilience. His companionship inspired Anne to create an organization that would become a lifeline for thousands of German Shepherds in need across Texas.
AGSDR’s story is one of love, perseverance, and second chances. Under Anne’s compassionate leadership, the organization has become more than a rescue. It is a community of volunteers and families bound by the belief that no German Shepherd should be left behind, and that every dog deserves safety, dignity, and love.
Our story began with one dog, but it has never been about just one rescue. It is about every Shepherd AGSDR can save along the way.

Since that first rescue, AGSDR has grown into a trusted nonprofit dedicated to giving German Shepherds a second chance at life. Every dog that comes into AGSDR’s care receives not only medical treatment and rehabilitation but also compassion, patience, and the promise of a better future. Each placement is not just a home, but the right home, where the bond between human and animal can flourish.
AGSDR has never been driven by numbers alone. For dogs who could not be adopted, AGSDR has embraced them as permanent family members in foster care, offering sanctuary and love for the remainder of their lives. Over more than two decades, this philosophy of care has resulted in more than 2,500 German Shepherds being rescued and finding loving forever homes.
From a $500 bookstore table to our biggest fundraiser.
For nearly two decades, our annual Holiday Gift Wrap fundraiser has brought together volunteers and community partners to raise critical funds for veterinary care.
What began with four volunteers raising $500 in a small bookstore has grown into our largest annual fundraising event, hosted at Nordstrom in Austin. The proceeds directly support our WINGS Program, helping German Shepherds receive the medical care they need to heal and begin again.
Rescue is a community effort, and AGSDR is grateful for the individuals, businesses, and organizations who help sustain our mission.
